　　二十世纪初的北爱尔兰港口城市贝尔法斯特，爱尔兰共和军的一个秘密小组抢劫一家公司的钱柜。小组负责人约翰尼·麦昆刚从狱中逃出不久，也参加了这次行动。巨款到手后，约翰尼为了掩护别人走在最后，混战中被警卫开枪打伤，他则打死了警卫。约翰尼躲进一个隐蔽所，昏过去。警察全城搜捕，丹尼斯和两个同伴为寻找他牺牲了。约翰尼得到市民的帮助。秘密小组的留守人凯思琳被严密监视。她在神父汤姆家中遇到以卖鸟为生的穷汉谢尔。谢尔发现了约翰尼，神父要将约翰尼交给警方。谢尔在邻居的疯画家鲁奇家中找到约翰尼，到神父家报仇，凯思琳拦住谢尔，自己找到约翰尼。正当凯思琳搀扶着约翰尼逃向港口，准备乘船离开时，警察包围了他们。凯思琳拿出手枪射击，乱枪响过后，凯思琳终于和心爱的人—起找到了归宿……
