T.S.Spivet是个12岁的奇才，酷爱制图学和科学图解。有一天，史密森尼博物馆打电话给他说：享有盛誉的贝尔德奖授予了他，他也被邀请去做次演讲。不为人知的是，他决定乘运货的火车穿越美国去华盛顿。但那儿没有一个人料想到他只是个小孩儿。带着一个望远镜，4个圆规，和他曾曾祖母留给他的回忆，T.S.开始了他神秘的旅程，这旅程最终将让他明白这个世界是怎么运作的……各种笔记、地图和图纸掺杂在幽默而又无法抵抗的具有想象力的故事叙述之中。

·这是导演让-皮埃尔·热内继1997年《异形4》后再度拍摄英语片，也将是他的首部3D电影，并登陆IMAX影院。有趣的是，热内之前曾欲执导《少年派的奇幻漂流》，因预算过高而未被福斯公司批准，在拍摄了《尽情游戏》后，这次他依然选择了少年冒险题材。 
 
·本片的主角少年斯派维由童星凯尔·凯特莱特主演，他曾出演过美剧《杀手信徒》，能流利说英语、俄语及汉语普通话，是一位语言天才。
