　　幼儿园女老师April（海伦·亨特 Helen Hunt 饰）一年前与比自己小的同事Ben喜结良缘，她迫切想要一个孩子的心愿给对方造成很大的压力，在医院养病的母亲劝她领养一个她又不接受，她要一个亲生的孩子，这一切都是因为April是领养儿，敏感的她从小就认为母亲对自己和对弟弟不一样。Ben突然提出离婚，母亲又病逝，April真正剩下自己一个人了。

　　命运峰回路转，一个自称Bernice（贝特·米德勒 Bette Midler 饰）的脱口秀女主持人跑出来跟April说自己是她的亲生母亲，她口若悬河滔滔不绝，一心想弥补39年来的缺憾。同时爱情亦透出一线光，April一个学生的父亲Frank（科林·费尔斯 Colin Firth 饰）被她吸引，二人控制着情欲的滋生，却更令它蔓延。当April认为一切都已经向好的方面转变时，她怀孕了……
