◎简　　介

　　故事发生在一个不知名的极权主义国家，没有交代具体时间，在一座因关押政治犯而臭名昭著的监狱里，狱警乔(范恩斯 饰)负责看守著名的政治犯，剧作家索恩（唐纳德·萨瑟兰 饰）。  

　　    作为地下反对组织的首领，索恩致力于通过恐怖主义活动和游击战推翻以总统儒尼奥尔为首的独裁政府。尽管乔不尽同意索恩的恐怖主义主张，但相处之下索恩凭着剧作家的雄辩口才使乔开始怀疑现有政权的合法性。此时，索恩的追随者发动了内战并节节胜利，在巨大的压力下，儒尼奥尔被迫释放了索恩，内战得以暂停。  

　　    索恩凭借号召力成为民族英雄，乔则成为总统护卫队的统领，索恩游说乔背叛总统。在一个漆黑的夜里，革命者潜入总统府，在一场模拟审判后，儒尼奥尔和第一夫人（罗拉·弗琳·鲍儿 饰）被就地处决。  

　　    索恩掌权后推行激进的革命政策，知识分子被送进集中营进行再教育，年轻人以向秘密警察告发父母为荣，甚至交通灯的颜色也被颠倒，红灯表示可以通行。对此表示强烈反对的乔也被送进集中营，新的统治者企图使他承认，在这个国家没有发生过任何政变。  

　　    愈发疯狂的索恩政权最终难逃覆灭，他和其他领导人被暗杀，旧政权复辟，集中营里的人纷纷获释，但乔由于参加过推翻上任政府的政变，一直被关押在狱中。  

　　    二十年过去了，乔成为监狱里唯一的囚犯，他每日坐在打字前，回忆所经历过的一切，至于他所叙述的事实是否确曾发生过，还是出于他的臆想，没人知道……
