　　乔（平·克劳斯贝 Bing Crosby 饰）只是一介普普通通的小职员，却爱上了大企业家的女儿苏珊（格蕾丝·凯利 Grace Kelly 饰）。两人的感情自然遭到了苏珊父亲布朗（西德尼·布莱克默 Sidney Blackmer 饰）的强烈反对，不仅如此，苏珊的父亲还将同女儿门当户对的富家大少爷介绍给女儿认识，想要撮合两人。
　　
　　自卑的乔大受打击，他离开了苏珊，选择和一位名叫爱丽丝的女人走到了一起。爱丽丝虽有家室，但她的性感和温柔抚慰了乔受伤的心灵，可即便如此，乔还是无法忘记苏珊，最终，他决定挤入上流社会，名正言顺的夺走苏珊。因为苏珊腹中怀上了乔的孩子，布朗不得不同意他们的婚事。
