《玩具之王》的导演和摄影师陪同了Max和以他为中心的小团体了一个夏天，拍摄下了许多令人不安的场景。本片在德国重要的莱比锡DOK电影节获得了最高奖项金鸽奖。然而本片的上映亦伴随着巨大的争议，左翼团体指责纪录片团队在电影中过分沉默，并未就主人公的背景和动机给出具体解释，反倒给与极右翼团体以宣扬自己主张的平台。
